I moved out of the city and professional life in 1992. I now live in a passive solar straw bale house without running water and couldn't be happier.

I want my grandkids to have a chance at a decent life, so I "live simply so all can simply live."

Photo is of the dog I live with and his cat (a wild cat he brought in).

Pew Survey: Fans of Colbert and Stewart know 'real' news, too

From the page:
"The results of the new Pew Survey on News Consumption (taken every two years and released this afternoon) suggest that viewers of the "fake news" programs The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are more knowledgeable about current events (as judged by three test questions) than watchers of "real" cable news shows hosted by Lou Dobbs, Bill O'Reilly and Larry King, among others -- as well as average consumers of NBC, ABC, Fox News, CNN, C-SPAN and daily newspapers.

"The national average for answering the three questions was only 18%. But 34% of The Colbert Report fans got them right, with 30% of The Daily Show viewers doing so -- even though the two Comedy Central shows draw younger audiences which generally scored less well on the "test" than older viewers/readers. Last night during the Saddleback Church Faith forum, John McCain told a story about a prison guard marking a cross in the dirt one Christmas while he was a POW. McCain's story bears a remarkable similarity to a story told in "The Gulag Archipelago" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, which was released in the US in 1973. McCain has previously expressed being a fan of Solzhenitsyn's. A bit of plagiarism?

There has been a lot of discussion across the blogosphere about this today. This diary tries to recap the research in one place without drawing conclusions.

Doctors: Lawsuits help guarantee drug safety

From the page:
"WASHINGTON (AP) -Top doctors who run one of the most influential U.S. medical journals are giving the U.S. Supreme Court some unsolicited legal advice about a major case.

"Lawsuits can serve as "a vital deterrent" and protect consumers if drug companies do not disclose risks to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration before it approves medicines for use, the editors of the New England Journal of Medicine said in a friend-of-the-court brief. The FDA "is in no position" to guarantee drug safety, the brief said."
